For a small business to thrive, it’s helpful to create a solid web presence. Doing so not only helps capture the attention of potential customers, but it is vital for longterm branding efforts. In order to establish a web presence for a small business, it starts with a professional web design. With this in mind, let’s discuss seven key elements that go into effective small business web design.

  1. Blog – Blogging is a simple yet efficient way to provide customers with your unique perspective and keep them updated on recent news. It’s also a perfect way to establish your authority on a subject and let people know how much expertise you have. Another positive aspect of blogging is that each post you create serves as a reference to take people back to your main business website (where you can create stronger calls to action). Over time, blogging can increase your organic traffic numbers substantially.
  2. Videos – While videos weren’t used all that much a few years ago, they are now vital for small business websites. By making videos, you can give your audience first-hand insight into your business. You can also let them get a feel for the personality of you and your employees. Basically, videos are a great way to provide the human touch to your website. To maximize your exposure, you may also want to post them on YouTube because it will provide additional traffic for your website.
  3. Bios – Another integral aspect of a successful small business website is bios. By using them, you can give customers a better idea of your business’s history and philosophy. You also provide a window into the backgrounds of key personnel, which can really help to strengthen the bond with potential clients. Even though your business may be small, embracing this fact is often appealing to many people and adds a touch of individuality.
  4. Contact Information – Providing some basic contact information is essential for providing customers with a convenient way to get a hold of you. Typically, this is added via a contact box underneath the header of your website. Some things to include are your business’s telephone number, email address and links to social media accounts like Facebook and Twitter. Ultimately, you want to demonstrate that your business has a home and make potential customers feel comfortable.
  5. Original Imagery/Quality Design – Since your website is a window into your small business, it’s important to convey a sense of professionalism. To accomplish this, you should use visually appealing designs that reflect the persona of your business. You should also strive to be original because it will distinguish you from competitors who are generic in their approach. Often, large businesses use a range of stock footage because they don’t get to a deeper level online and allow visitors to connect with individual employees. Be different and showcase that you are a small business by integrating original photography.
  6. Content Management System – A content management system (CMS) like WordPress or Drupal is an effective way to create and modify your website’s content without a bunch of hassle. It’s also great because it allows multiple employees to collaborate and make adjustments to your content when necessary. This is perfect if you don’t have any programming experience, but still want a great looking website.
  7. Capture Form – In order to capitalize on leads and make connections, you will also want to implement a capture form on your website. Basically, this consists of a few fields like a person’s name, email address and phone number. You can then use it as a convenient way to store information and use it later on. Also, this is used to tie into Google Analytics and conversion goals.
