When we talk about web design, it’s so easy to talk about the visual graphics, spacing, coding, and the latest technologies available. However, one of the most basic elements – color – is often forgotten despite the fact that its impact is strong. Think about it: we can easily identify flags, logos, and brand association simply based on a color palate given to us. By using color strategically, we can continue the process of telling the story and characterizing our brand.

With so many color configurations available, though, it can be difficult to navigate color design for your website. Colors can clash or simply detract from the overall flow from the site. Fortunately, the solution is much easier than you think! You don’t have to be a web design expert to know what colors will work and which ones won’t. How? Simply take advantage of the current color trends.

Using current color trends in your web design will keep your site looking up-to-date. It will also help the overall flow of your site and highlight the elements that you want visitors to quickly notice. Ultimately, this can help strengthen your sales funnel and improve click-through rates as well!

In 2013, here are some of the color trends to keep an eye on:

  • Grayscale. Gone are the days when using black and white to make bold statements was popular. Now, it’s all about subtlety and focusing on the crucial elements of a page. And what’s more subtle than gray? Whether you use it in your banner, as the background color, or in various other places, using gray on a website increases readability and adds interest without hindering design.

    If you’re using grayscale, one of the popular things to do is to use bright colors (or black) to create attention-grabbing accents. The gray not only allows the bright colors to stand out, but subtly compliments them as well!

  • Pastels. Similar to the muted grayscale, pastels offer more subdued colors than our primary palate. They’re friendly and engaging, carrying a sense of vintage with them wherever they’re used. Pastels are particularly popular among clothing stores and brands that are naturally hip.
  • Neon. Unlike disco, bold colors aren’t dead – they’ve only transformed into neon! These colors immediately catch the eye of the user and are easy to implement anywhere. They’re bright hues coupled with grayscale truly create a design that allows you to focus on content while maintaining good design.
  • Blocked colors. Color blocking allows brands to checkerboard colors throughout their site. Rooted in design elements from the fashion world, blocked colors can be as flexible as you want. The size of the blocks can change and you can take advantage of any color palate at your disposal. Because you’re only dealing with squares, the minimal aspect is still part of the web design.
  • Matching pictures. Since images have their own color palates, feel free to use images on your site to compliment or enhance the color design. Furthermore, experiment with supplementing and contrasting the web page through the use of pictures. The configuration possibilities are limitless!
