Because of this, many companies participated in link buying, or purchasing backlinks on spammy websites with low quality content. However, with new algorithm updates, Google now penalizes websites that have bad backlinks.

2. Using Duplicate Content
Another black hat SEO tactic that can lead to serious penalties is posting duplicate content. If you copy content from another website and use it on yours, you will ultimately hurt your SEO strategy. On the other side of the coin, content scrapers often attempt to steal your content before your site is indexed, making it seem as though your website has the duplicate content. Prevent this by consistently updating your sitemap.

3. Keyword Stuffing
Proper keyword use is important for SEO. Websites must make use of keywords and key phrases that rank highly for their industry, ensuring that they are found by searchers. However, another black hat SEO tactic that will harm your SEO strategy is keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing refers to using keywords excessively in the content and other elements of your website rather than writing naturally.

4. Posting Irrelevant Content

This means that your business needs to use long-tail and geo-targeted keywords to reach their local audience.
