5 Signs it’s Time to Overhaul Your Website

A website is your business’s physical building in the digital world. Just as you want to keep your physical location clean and well-maintained for customers, you want to ensure that your website is as impressive as it can possibly be. However, it’s not enough to simply invest in a website and think that you’re good to go. After all, ever-evolving web design trends will eventually leave your website outdated.

Think of your website as the first impression that many web users will have of your business. A professional and attractive site will encourage users to explore your services and products, while a messy and poorly designed website will have users clicking elsewhere. Here are 5 signs it’s time to invest in a new site:

  1. You can’t find yourself on Google. While optimized content with researched keywords is the largest contributing factor behind search engine results, your site’s structure itself will affect how search engines rank your business. For instance, descriptive labels that aptly summarize content and describe a page will boost your site more than non-descriptive labels, such as “products” or “about us.” Fortunately, many older sites can easily be updated to reflect current trends and practices that will inadvertently improve your SEO efforts. On the other hand, if updating site components is causing timely and expensive complications, it might be time to invest in a new site.
  2. Your site isn’t responsive. Did you know that over 130 million Americans now own a smartphone and use it to browse the web? Consumer behavior is changing, so more and more people are browsing on mobile devices. You want to keep up with this trend to take advantage of the gigantic audience surfing on smartphones. If your site isn’t responsive and doesn’t adapt to mobile devices, then you’re missing out on a large consumer base. Smartphone users are more likely to leave a site that doesn’t adapt to their device than one whose pages beautifully translate to their screen.
  3. Your competitor has a brand new site. One of the most effective business practices is always staying one step ahead of your competitors. If your competitor has a new site, chances are that it’s taking advantage of the latest trends to benefit SEO, mobile users, and conversion rates. Furthermore, your competitor’s new site will look fresh, polished, and modern. If you have an older site, the differences between the two web designs will be all the more emphasized. Don’t be left in the dust! Consider updating your site to stay ahead of your competition.
  4. Conversion rates are dismal. If your visitors aren’t converting into paying customers, it may be time for an updated design, new content, a new website, or a combination of all of the above! Remember, aside from defining your business and presenting services and products to consumers, the point of your website is to grow your business online. If it isn’t accomplishing this goal, then it’s time to overhaul your online strategy.
  5. It’s been a while… Sometimes there isn’t any one major issue that tells you it’s time to invest in a new website. It may be that there are multiple, smaller issues that collectively can damage the user experience. If this is the case, and if it’s been a while since you’ve invested in web design, then it’s time to rejuvenate your online presence. It’s always a good idea to keep your image fresh, and a new site is the easiest way to excite existing customers and attract new ones.
